Winter Bike Mechanics

As a bike mechanic it always amazes me how in winter how much time, energy, and effort triathlete's or cyclist's will put in on the turbo trainer. Or their strength, swim stroke, or running form. Yet they put in zilch during that same period for bike work or whatever else could be done. It's really such a waste.

Sure as a mechanic it's wonderful as I get to crank up the labour costs when I have to use blowtorches and hammers to pull your siezed into the frame BB. Especially since the majority barely do any bike mainteneance.

Winter is the perfect time for you to take your tri or road bike to the shop especially since it will only sit bolted to the turbo trainer all winter. Shops are slower during the winter so the emchanics have more time. Take it down to the shop and have the mechanics pull every bolt, clean, and regrease or loctite it. Replace any cables or housing that is cracked. And can't forget to pull, clean, and regrease your seatpost. The seatpost a common area for bonding to the frame. Now is also a good time to pull the old bar tape and install some fresh tape. By doing it now you get to start the year with a bike ready to go and you avoid the annual Spring panic when everyone races to the shop when the sun finally comes out of hibernation.

The other aspect of this time of year that is good especially with the bikes mounted to the trainers. Now is the perfect time to install the new parts like bars, brakes, derrailleurs, and such. Maybe it's just me but as a coach it makes more sense to use some of that time stuck to a trainer to see if one really like those new aero bars or saddle. Plus in winter it's much easier to take one's time and install parts properly. Less being in a hurry and not wanting to miss ride time because we all know how hard it is to get triathlete's to give up training time.

Best and Worst of 2011

24 hours till New Years begins so it's that time to review the year.

Worst Event:

Easy really... getting taken out by a car.

But can't of course ignore that I messed up my foot in a bail in the spring so wasn't able to run at all since the spring.

Best Events:

Dundass Monstercross because ride with friend's and soup post ride. Plus the once a year visit to Cafe Domestique.

Antirace because I got to ride some where new. As well as get entertained by the antics of those who inbibe.

Tour du Buttertar because it's always good to refresh one's memory of suffering.

Getting hit by the car in August. Because it shows that the crash skills I learned from years of hurling myself down frozen ski race courses are still there.

Best Parts:

DMR Cro-Mo bars... strong and tough. After installing and a few rides noticed my right hand and forearm no longer get aggravated. Exellent.

Rear wheel...built myself and bombproof.

Clothing:

Fox Launch Knee.. easy to put on and forget. Saved my knee at least twice.

Core Rat Ballistic Jacket.. bombproof, windproof, and keeps warm when wet.

LG Alpine Canada bibs shorts... has Alpine Canada on it.

In the last month after making a decision to correct a 4 year old bad decision. I began researching into a more useful frame for road riding. Sure I loved my old Centurion Ironman but the problem is that the fork is dead and it's hard to replace.

After consideration I have decided on a Cyclocross frame. Simple frame to do it all on. I'm not aiming to win a World Cup or keep up with Dave Scott. So I won't be requiring weight weenie light or aero dynamics. But of course with the various materiels available it can be a bit of a mine field. Fortunately I had a source of real world info on frames and materiels. I would ask my Croation boss Jay.

Jay learned everything about bikes and frames the hard way in Europe. Doing his own repairs, racing, and working for various teams. Add to that add in a education on machining and metals to go with it. The guy is a walking library of info you will never see in a book. So over the last few weeks I have been picking Jay's mind about frame material. And it has been a bit of an education. It would surprise most to know that in Europe riders don't flip their bikes like we do here in North America. They will buy one frame and ride it until it breaks. Sounds so much like what we where like in the 80's. But what he told me confirmed what I was thinking when it came to frame materiel.

The only choice for a frame that was to be bought once was.... Chromoly steel. Because once the inside of the frame has been sprayed with oil to inhibit rust. A steel frame would keep going. And knowing my destructive habits towards aluminum frames. Well my only option was steel. Plus for me having seen how much abuse my Chromag steel frame has taken in the last 4 and a half years. Well... why go different and tempt fate? Have the same chain stay failure in 4 years? No thank you very much.

Well when I consider that I'm a father and married I have to put aside my "want" and focus on what frame and material will meet my needs. Sure in an ideal world I would have multiple bikes... DH, 29er, Cross bike, road bike, and a tri bike. but in reality my needs require one bike able to ride road, do a group ride, race occasionally, and a little off road fun. Plus add in the fact I prefer to bash my way through winter riding outside. So when all things are considered a steel cyclocross frame is what is needed.

Plus there is one other consideration not usually mentioned. Steel frames have a bit of give meaning they absorb road shock. This doesn't seem significant but when I have a tendency to large volumes of bike mileage. Then add in a permamently messed up lower back from a bad ski racing crash. Steel doesn't aggravate it... while aluminum has done it every time. And aggravated backs take away from the fun.

Of course I readily admit I do take pleasure during races at beating other athletes on the appropriate bike while I'm not. I raced in the early 2000's on a 1988 Centurion Ironman..Dave Scott edition against guy's on the latest Cervelo's. It's kind of a Tom Warrenesque thing. But that is another story. Though it's really about the fact I want to do this once not replace every 3-4 years. And I'd much rather do this once more and have a frame that lasts for a long time.

So after much research have arrived at the choice of a Planet X Kaffanback frame and fork. The biggest plus being that it comes with disc and cantilever brake mounts. This is provides me options for brake choices and rim choices in the future. It will be interesting to document how this build goes.

What Tools Carried

Since I had to clean out the tool section of my larger hydration pack. I thought now was a time to share what old dirt bag type riders carry in their packs on the trail to do trailside repairs.

One has to understand that having grown up in BC and especially starting mountain biking in the mountains. I learned the importance of being able to do your own repairs. Because the reality is if you can't it's a long walk and potentially cold walk out.

Tire levers are always required. Normally smaller plastic but because I use a more heavy duty tire I carry these metal levers. The longer length allows more torque to be applied when prying of stubborn tires from the rim.

Shock pump for when the forks need some air. As having one's fork bottom out easily is no fun.
Spare tube as it's easier to simply replace the tube and patch the damaged tube at home.
Small hand pump for when a flat happens. In some situations this will be supplemented with a couple CO2 canisters.

Gerber Multi Plier.. handy for many things from pulling objects from tire to cutting up energy bars.

You know it always amazes me how many people ride with nothing for tools. Nothing messes up your ride like having a mechanical that can't be fixed because you don't have tools. Plus in some places it can equal a very miserable walk home.

2011 Anti Race- Part 2

This year I received an invite to attend the famous or infamous invite to the Anti Race. And end of year gathering put on by the un evil empire known as Misfit Cycles. And it's figure head Peter the Misfit.

So on Saturday Oct 23rd did the fun filled drive up the 400 to Barrie to then get up to Collingwood. Of course like most plans they don't stay intact. So arrived late so had no time to change from DH wheels to lighter wheels. So it was heavy DH tires on DH wheels. In the scheme of things it seemed more beneficial to have a working brake with DH sections expected. This was due to a late evening brake swap in a Starbucks of all places.

But I didn't forget to swap my tools, pump, and tube to the ride pack unlike a certain Team Dicky the Forgetfull.

Of course after the usual swapping of bike related insults. Apparentely the Mistress offended our host No Gears Peter. Something about her dirtbag esthetic offended his delicate singlespeed sensitivities. And off we went with a little road cruise to warm up for the death hike of the day up the escarpment. Nothing like an endless grunt.. the last time I did something like this I was payed.

At the top it was a rest, some beverages, heckling, then off to ride mud, leaves, rock, and singletrack. No idea where we went as the area around Collingwood am not familiar with at all. Some good technical stuff. Unfortunately some racer heads where still a bit in racer mode still so no chance to retry some sections I messed up on. There was a few I would like to have retried. Maybe need a road trip next summer.

Of course we have to add in the 30 minute wait in the woods to figure out where the 2 local riders went to. Only to have them rejoin us 45 minutes later further along the trail. One guy had hurt himself so had headed back early via road. While Ted had crashed hard and caught back up to us. And we continued the parade through the woods with howls galore. And in some sections was reminded why I want a Gravity Dropper post on the Mistress soon.

And with Misfit Peter complaining that he was hungry we arrived at the DH into Collingwood. Which became a sudden every rider for himself affair. And then we where at the cars. For me it was 4 hours riding a beast hardtail with the wrong wheels and tires. And near the end some slight grinding of the BB bearings. Legs a little tired yet still okay despite the low volume of riding this year.

Till next year and hopefully in better riding fitness as well.

Made the trek up to Ganaraska for the Dirty Enduro for the 3rd year. And doing the 30k for year 2. Plus unless I'm getting paid I don't wake up for 9am starts any more.

On the way up had the mental argument of ride cliplless or flats this year. Or basiically treat this seriously, crap out a liver, and puke at the finish. Or treat it as fun.. bomb the DH's and skid the corners. I do admit wasn't feeling the race mentality this year as knowing a month ago was nailed by a car and lost almost 2 weeks. Then messed up my shoulder 2 weeks ago in another bail in the Don. Plus had been thinking about some news I received from BC.

The decision was made just after getting out of the car. Bunch of riders getting all stressed out prestart. Forget that noise let's have fun this year so flat pedals it is. Maybe watching Klunkerz the night before wasn't a great idea.

After the pre race briefing it was off. This year there was alot more fireroad to begin which was nice as it allowed the riders to spread out more so there was no pile up at the singletrack. Though it was like a funeral procession with everyone so quiet... no woo hoo's. A couple of wheelies and the BBBBBRRRRAAAPPPP BBBBBBBRRRRRAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPP noises took care of that. Because this is supposed to be a fun.

Then it was into the singletrack. Since this isn't being treated as a race I will not bore you with things like elctrolytes, puking, leg cramps, and whether my heart rate was to high. Nor will I whine about there being to much sand. That would remove the fun aspect of this year.

Climbing was just that this year. The fun was in the DH's, clearing root sections with a good hop and launching off the small drops. Then of course railing some corners and some 2 wheel drifts in the sand. basically riding like a goofball. Like a Crazy Canuck pumping some of the bumps for some fun.

Didn't stop at the aid station like in past years way to easy to stop and delay riding more. So back into the singletrack. And more of the same railing turns and bombing the DH sections. And suddenly it was the last bit before the finish, so popped the bump for a wee bit of air then it was done. After hanging for a bit was to the car to change out of the sweaty gear and back for some chili. Caught up with Dean formerly from the Cycle Solutions crew now of Picton. Met 14 Stone of MTbr fame. Watched the awards then it was time to hit the road.

The Don dirt jumps where calling. Beer, jumps, and other mayhem.

Mentality and The Mental War

In the last few weeks on MTBr.com a forum I peruse. There have been discussions about pedal types, smoothing of trails, and so on all leading to the usuall internet sniping.

Yet when you put aside all the physical arguments for all these sides it really boils down to one simple issue. As a coach the mental aspect is by far the biggest challenge we face when trying to teach a new skill, correcting mistakes, or even simly getting an athlete to relax.

When I speak of the Mental War it's not just our individual self doubt I am referring to. It is the Mind Body Conflict I am talking about. Which put in simple terms... our mind makes us feel good when we do things that conserve energy and is basically taking the easier choice. So when one is faced with a trail challenge that requires us to use more energy get over then the ride around. If we take the ride around our mind without us even realizing it makes us feel good about it because it took less work.

The reality is that we have this body that can ride flat pedals, clipless, and so on. Yet it is all controlled by an operating system (The brain) who's number one goal is to use the least amount of effort possible.

Unless one puts the mental effort in we will always choose the easier option. Another example is the whole which pedal is better argument. Science has proven that riding flat pedals take more work mentally and physically. While riding clipless pedals uses less mentally and physically. So the mind rewards us again by making us feel good when riding clipless. And in the end the whole Clipless vs Flat pedals argument is not about what works better. It's about what our mind unconciously tells us is better based on energy conservation and requires the least amount of work.

At the end of all arguments, jabbering, and such it boils down to choice. The choice being,

A. Take the easy way and be happy with things as they are

or

B. Accepting the challenge to do new things and learn new skills.

Added a spacer on the upper bult to stop the caliper from rubbing on the disc.

This arrived Friday. A pair of Hope Enduro brakes via Ebay. After getting them could tell they needed a bit of work. After pulling the levers, checked to see if the internal spring at the lever was good it was. Next checked the brass bushing within the lever... siezed as suspected. After digging through the brake part bin found another lever with a still good bushing. A rebuild and one working rear brake.

Now to try and mount the rear tonight. Let the fun begin. Fisrt to make tea.

Greazy Cream

Let's take a look to see how it's healing post crash.

Definitely a nit of bleeding every now and then. I put antibiotic cream on the area every time I changed over the dressing. Even though the doc said I didn't have to it was easier to keep one on for work.

Definitely some infection came off with the dressing.

Not to bad. Not much infection to be seen. Though it's been itchy off and on all day... it's healing.

Another angle in the mirror. But all things considered better to have lots of blood and it end up looking like this. The alternative could have been months in the hospital.

Today got taken out by a young kid driving. He crossed double lanes over while yapping to the girl in his car. Hit me with his left side which bounced me into the right side of a parked car and over the hood. And slam into the street, could see his rear wheel 6 inches from my head.. According to the witness's he had a look of sheer panic when I sprung up and moved to try and block him getting away. So he took off.

Arm is from when my arm broke his side window as he hit me. Dripping every where. bike has it all over the handlebars.

By the time the cops got to me with the amb guys I was pulling up in front of the ER 3 blocks away. Thanks to the witness who called it in and passed on to them where I was headed.

The Doc pulled some glass shrapnel. It wasn't that deep but it was bleeding like crazy before they cleaned it up.

I feel nothing.

Yep tonight was a fun filled night.

Big Dirty Pickering Ride

On Sunday was the Big dirty Pickering Ride organized by Nick. Another free event put on by buddies for buddies. All bikes and all pedals where accepted. After gathering at Nick's in Pickering and the usual taking forever to get organized it was off for the ride.

Unlike the last ride I chose the more DH oriented wheelset option. Gotta make it even harder.

Nick led us out into the side streets that led to the trail. The route as the previous rides started took us through a local park with the usual rock to play on. Since Tim chickened out I had to nail it and it was cleaned. And then it was the trails of the Duffins Creek Valley. After a good climb it was the exit at the tracks.

Then it was the rail trail .. well unofficial as they where abondoned and unmaintained other then locals using it. Lots of sweepers and such to deal with. At one point a bit of fun was added as Tim tried to do a Lee style race pass but he discovered that I know how to block very well. Later in the ride was reminded that I do need to get a dropper type seatpost. Will make riding a little smoother.

Nick took us into a section of Rouge trails I hadn't seen yet. Or I mean when I first looked in 2002 there wasn't much there really. Now there is a trail. Though I suspect it's from the local residents walking there more then anything else. But it's good to know there is something else to ride.

Then as we have barely begun the climb of Ben Trash..... thunder and rain. The full drench. And of course the wait for the made the wrong turn on the climb crowd. All the while listening to Tim whine about his tires having nothing for tread. That's what happens when you become a weight weenie apparentely.

After descending and then a log scramble it was the ride back to Nick's. Pretty much the same rail trals back with a wee bit of mud puddle thrown in. Of course having to stop to try and ride Nick's little downhill line. Not as easy this time with there being a thin layer of slick mud.

After a bit more trail and cutting back through the park at the beginning we where back at Nick's. Upon which it rained some more though Nick had erected the large tent in anticipation of this. And it was BBQ time.

All in all a good ride. Riding flat pedals with the DH wheel set up wasn't a big issue. Though a dropper style seatpost with remote would have been a benefit.

Kingston Death Enduro Part 4

Once at Cat Woosa it was road to Bayridge then a left. Taking Bayridge to Highway 2. Took highway 2 till the turn off near the BMX track. Cutting through the park to connect to Woodbine and road again the rest of the way to Taylor Kidd. At which point it was just over 5 hours of riding to this point. Though was having to make some mental calculations on ride time vs seting sun time.

Rode the up through the farmers fields heading towards the quarry. Then took Guinness that connected to BHRT's which popped me out on Taylor Kidd. Then into the other trails on the south side. After nearly1.5-2 hours decided to pull the plug. Which turned out to be the 6 hour mark. It was nearly 8 and didn't have a light for riding in the dark.

Headed home with a stop for a well earned Slushie and Doritos. By the time I got to the house it was about 6 hours and 42 minutes of riding not including the police stop.And standing in the Mac's lot I was distinctly recalling the last time I did anything this stupid was back in 2005 leading up to Peterborough.

And I still think it is fun.

Kingston Death Enduro Part 3

After leaving Timmies it was continuing down Dalton Ave to the hydro line entrance to the next section. Found that they have been busy in the last couple of years adding some path. As well as it looks like they will be finally adding a bridge on the K&P trail.

After entering at the hydroline it was a jarring ride through where they I guess hope to build houses in the future. Somewhere in this area was crash number 2, hard to see the ruts when they are covered with either overgrowth or the shrapnel from the cutting machines.

4 hours in.

There is a little creek crossing which thankfully the machines did not wreck. This is in the non summer months pretty deep. Had to check to make sure the bottom was still firm not mush because of quad riders gunning it.

After the crossing it was across another chopped field to another creek crossing that was wrecked but still rideable. Then a little hill climb to the area of the NIB Park. Which was thought to be on the bulldozed list almost 3 months ago. But it turns out not so. No play time as that might have been a bad idea at this point .

After the park it was a very short climb to the residential road. Then a left on Sydenham to take the hydroline Quad track. This section continued the flavour of the ride- Overgrown. With the usual mix of quad rut, quad hole, and brush bashing thrown in. At one point had to some heavy bush bashing to connect with Cataraqui Woods Drive.

Kingston Death Enduro Part 2

After going through the base and hitting some of the trails on the base. It was down the hill past Fort Henry to cross the causeway. Then to head along the trails along Cataraqui Creek heading out towards the 401.

Enroute noticed this. A trials line. Return later to play on it.

Further along entered this trail. Not much as it's a old industrial site.

So after the above section hooked up with Montreal. Added a little extra pain to the ride by being mirror clipped by a driver. Then just as I hit Taylor Kidd was waved down at the Timmies by a KPD officer who had caught the woman driver. And made my statement to the officer. Oh... the added excitement. After was finished with my report wanted to take the trail option up but was way to overgrown. Then connected with a road that went along the tracks till it connects with Dalton Rd.

After reaching this point took a quick rest in this bit of shade.

After about 20 minutes came to the new Timmies on Sir John A. Definitely the most cooked customer they had all day. Interesting it was when after 3 hours how when I went to top up the Camelbak bladder there was still ice in it. So loaded up with a couple of bottles of Pepsi and a few cookies. As I knew the test was coming over the next few hours of the ride. The first 3 are the easy part really.

Kingston Death Enduro- Part 1

This idea came to be when I found out I had 7 weeks on my own. So came up with a plan to put as much bike mileage as possible in one day. The bad idea part was doing this after 3 years of mediocre training.

The very bad idea part was starting at 2pm on a hot July Sunday. But one has to work first.

Had all the stuff prepared... half camelbak and water bottle of water in freezer that would add water to for later, bug juice, sunscreen, tools and tube, money, and camera. So it was off. First destination being Roger's Trails. After about 45 minutes as it was hot and humid so kept that pace easier as it was going to be a long afternoon.

Road past the base to Roger's Trails. Nothing special other then a out and back ride section.

Bug juice... to keep the bug bites to a minimum. Especially since this year was so damp and the bugs where in large quantities.

Somewhere in Rogers still looking and feeling good.

Dry dry dry would be the general flavour of the day.

Some sections where way more overgrown then this and impassable when factor in time and effort. Which under the days heat and humidity would be a bad idea to try and basically drag a bke through.

After riding what was rideable at Roger's it was back down Highway 2 towards the base. To ride around Fort Henry on some trails there.

June 8th Endo Race

After 3 weeks of every excuse for not showing up to the last 3 Endo races. Got the Mistress and I to the site for this weeks O2 debt location. The new place being Macintosh Mills which is an interesting place. Report on that later in the season.

Got a little lost finding the place. So of course had little time to get organized and ready. Nil for warm up which would come back to bite me later. Plus remind me that 3 years off equals lousy fitness. Especially when you add in Canadian Shield rock and hills. After a quick line up we where off.

It was to be a 4 lap course and never having ridden the area was riding blind. So took the first lap easy as per my usual plan. It was a good plan as the short but sharp hills showed that my climbing skills where rusty and leg strength was low. So despite the climbs sucking high on the suckage scale the course was fun. Technical and some downhill sections.

Since my climbing was not helping I simply set out to be consistent and ride well. To that end I achieved that. And it was hot and humid as well. I managed to drain 2.5 L of water no problem in the 4 laps. And after 40 minutes I was done. Then after the usuall post race milling around and putting bikes on cars. It was off to Brockville for food.

Post race analysis shows that I need to do more hill repeats. And have already begun getting that done.

Altura Attack Waterproof Shorts

As part of the plan to buy gear that actually works instead of making do. Looked again to the masters of filth riding.. the Brits. Especially since it is so difficult aquiring baggy shorts that are actually waterproof. Seems kind of strange that one can't buy shorts like this in Canada. A place where the wethaer can be wet and cold.

Finally got my hands on a pair of Altura Attack shorts . And of course in the only acceptable colour for cycling….black. And hardly had they arrived did they get used as we had a sudden warm day. Which meant lots of slush and wet road. A perfect test for waterproof outer shorts.

And after 2 hours of riding through wet crud.. no dreaded wet riders butt. Which is a good thing. And makes the riding way more enjoyable as a cold and wet chamois is about as much fun as paying taxes.

When inspected closer you see that all seems have been taped on the inside. There is a simple system for waits adjustment in the back. 2 tabs you can adjust to make the shorts a little tighter or looser as needed. And of course Altura provided 2 front zipper pockets. Perfect for say house keys to get in the house when cold and wet without that digging through packs or jersey’s with cold hands

One has to keep in mind that while waterproof and sealed that it will still require care. Not washing with liquid detergents and all the other care requirements of this type of fabric. The shorts will also need once a year getting with the special re-waterproofing stuff like available from companies like Nik Wax.

After 4 months of rain and slush the Altura Attack shorts have done the job. And I will be buying another pair later this year.

Tuesday Night World's May 10th

As part of the 2011 Team NFI’s goals was to do as many free events as possible. The first being the Buttertart Tour about a month ago.

After getting the info from Endo Racing in Brockville. Info meaning a invite to join in. Amazing how you get stuff like that when it’s time. So loaded up the team car and up the highway we went.

The gathering spot was a old gravel pit out in Limerick. After some random hello’s the plan was announced by those who I think where in charge. One has to keep in mind that this is a free event so it’s closer to old school mountain bike racing. And so we went out on what was deemed a neutral lap to get a rough idea of the course.

After the easy one lap preride we gathered back on the road for the go. The course was 3 laps of the preride where the final instructions. Then it was go. Being the first sprint ype event in years took it easy for a bit. This was after all a short course style race and it’s been a long time since I went that hard and fast. And it was a better plan to save the go harder faster for the last lap. Basically build up the pace over the 3 laps.

Lap 1 was racing pace. Though not as fast as later. Took advantage of the trails little rollers.. pump track method. Looking for extra speed without effort. Rail the mini berms where ever they can be found. Hop the roots and loft the drops.

Lap 2.. Same as Lap 1 but go a bit faster and harder. made one little screw up and didn’t get mad. Misjudged the corner a little. Got passed at the beginning by of the lap by a high school kid. No big deal. Figured I’d end up passing him in lap 3 so let him have the lead. Even though I let him know don’t worry about it just ride. He kept looking nervously back. And after a while this led him to making a mistake. Made a mental note of this.

Lap 3. Same again except all out hard. At the end felt pain in my left knee. And suddenly was done.

After all was done. Good Tuesday night race return. Need to definitely work on strength and speed now. As well as some parts improvements namely.. rear tire, grips, and handlebar. Maybe now I can get a DMR Cr Mo Wingbar.

When I went back to the car the car next to me was the high school kid I passed when I messed up. Asked him how it went and he mentioned he kept looking to see if I was going to pass. He appreciated the info about never looking back. Kind of nice when one is able to pass on the info us old guys learned the hard way.

Next week will have fresh rear meat.

Nothing like a day in the woods.

The Hoe.. my favorite tool. It cuts, it trenches, chops, packs, and so on. And even better saves my back.

Not really a berm per say. It's more to keep one on the trail for no. After it gets ridden a bit it will become more of a berm.

Then 2 hours of riding at CB. Nothing spectacular. Though I did realize I need to invest in some knee type armour that is less DH oriented. Easier to haul. Looking at either the Race Face Flank or the Ndura version. More inclined to the Flank though.

Wheels and Legion

In the last week have built up one wheel and now in the process of finishing the rear wheel. Finally have the oppurtunity to do it. Just took the right connection and not having an annoying boss who got upset when you where trying to learn something new. And it gets easier everytime.

Next on the wheel build menu will be swapping out the Formula 36H on the DH wheel for a Hope. The reason behind this is the rim is a double wide which is bombproof. And by doing this now it will allow me not to have to be limited in forks in the future. Besides that is the goal after all. That being all wheels especially front's will be Hope or DMR which allow for them to be adapted to different interfaces.

On other news. First I get some casual work at my buddies bike shop. Now I get a call from the Royal Canadian Legion to come in and work. Hmm... maybe I will be getting the Banshee before June at this rate.

You know, there are days where I think the only reason parents have children is to test out survival of the fittest. Here we have a parent who can buy thir kid the $400 dollar BMX bike, the $140 Moto pants with the $65 jersey yet can't buck up the $30 to at least give the kid a dirt jump helmet.

Spent this afternoon fixing up a drop. Over a year ago someone decided to dig a huge hole and it caused th stuff above it to start migrating downhill. So it's been improved. Now to hit it tomorrow as long as it doesn't rain as they are predicting.

Got my hands on a pair of DMR V12 pedals used for $20. After waiting for some parts rebuilt the left side. It's funny how it's only cosmetic damage, the paint is coming of. Other then that and replacing the bushing on the left pedal they are fine.

This is after the first ride. Great pedals. As good as new one's and way cheaper.

Saturday was spent in St Catherine's at Brock Uni. Unfortunately the snow was still on the ground and to soft to really ride around. But some DH fun was still available.

2011 Tour Du Butter Tart

And the first event chosen for 2011 was the Tour du Butter Tart. Planned by the same crew that brought us the Dundas Monstercross ride last fall.

The overlord of financing met with the Sith of Training to decide that attendance was mandatory in the 2011 training scheme. Specifically as thie little ride met the most important and overriding concern for 2011... that it was free. So on the morning of March 2oth with Ham Breakfast sandwich and large ice Capp it was the drive from Scarborough to Dundas. And the specific location of Cafe Domestique a coffee house worthy of it's own entry in the future.

Even though the meeting time was 10am like any social ride it's not written in stone. Everyone had their shiny modern road or CX bike with the luddite black beast being the oddball. And after intorductions, getting geared up, and the usuall waiting it was off.

For me this would be my first road bike ride in about 5 and a half years. The last being when I cracked the RM Rail's chainstay. So the bike was matched to my expectations.. that being a 100k spin. No chasing or road sign sprints.

In the end I have no real idea of the route as it was Marc and Kim's plan. For me it was the social aspect and using something to force myself out of the mental hole of lowered activity due to life of the last 3 years. And in the end this was a ride that was needed to push myself a little. It's easy to maintain the lower ride levels when one is busy running the house, taking care of their daughter, and helping Joely so she can coach. It's funny how when you are in the middle of it all you don't really notice this.

It's been 20 years since I last rode a road bike in the area near Dundas and the Niagara Escarpment. It's funny how little it changes in the more rural areas. The roads are still the same, drivers the same, the smell the same, and the usual wind. The headwind this time was pretty mild. I recall some pretty heinous one's I trained in while going to school there and no I don't miss them.

In the first 30 minutes was the usual ride occurance of a bunch powering a head and miss the turn. Happens on every ride or run.. All part of the fun of group rides really. Then it was down to riding at your pace to each of the pit stops on the route. The first was pretty uneventful. It was the second that provided the amusement with the owners wife fuming about no $20's. Hmmm... funny how one complains yet you have 25 plus riders ready to spend money. And the 3rd stop had the best of all....chocolate chip, skor, peanut butter, and other variations of butter tarts.

Shortly after leaving the 3rd stop nearly T Boned some farmers big hairy dog. Yep for the first time in 38 years of riding I almost T Boned a dog. Tom got to see that bit of fun as he caught me and went a head. And then it was back to the last bit which included a section from the Good Friday Road race which reminded me that I have to stop riding with road gearing and go with a cyclocross set up. Way easier on my ski racers knees. After a while it was the last stop which we all said just go as all where butter tarted out. Shortly after leaving there it was the Sydenham Rd descent. Fun though a little uncomfortable with a stem and bar to low. More on that later.

And then it was all said and done. The good bye's and all went there seperate ways after 5 plus hours of riding. For me it was the drive to Burlingto to play a little on some urban stuff with Mistress and coffee while I emailed Joely to let her know I was still breathing and not lying in a ditch having a nap.

2x4's and Tea

It was a big evening at Team NfI's world headquarters. The work list wasn't that big but as decreed by the technical section stuff needed to be adjusted.

First order of business food and tea.

First issue was the spacing on the roadie. As a modern hub spacing is wider then the frames original spec some adjusting was required. After a careful research of the internet and the previously mentioned tea. It was to work. As xcan be seen the tools where rather primitive.

After many measurements and application of torque. The desired spacing was achieved. Then after careful close inspection it was found that everything was in order and the job went perfectly. Didn't even have to make any changes.

The next problem was a rattling rear cassette. It was discovered that the plastic spacers were a wee bit to wide. After a little digging around in the bin of parts came up with this.

After checking the sizing. Installed it and voila....

No more rattling cassette.

Alt- Racing

You see it in running especially through Club Fat Ass out of Vancouver. The it I'm referring to is alternative events.

You hear it all the time people complaining about the costs of races. In cycling, triathlon, and running. And in Tri it gets even worse as some races are nearing $150 in Ontario. Sure I like going to event and seeing how fast I can go against others. But let us face reality. That being it isn't cheap and shelling out all the time gets expensive. And that's before you add in fuel and other costs to race.

That is what Club Fat Ass is about. Simply it's about an event that is no frills and fun. No fes, no hassles, and go. Sounds like a solution to the whole races are getting to expensive issue. Yet when ever this type of idea gets suggested especially in Ontario. All you get is silence. Well.. less now thanks to the Garage Monster for example. Add to that the group out of Brockvill and their mountain bike races every Tuesday in the summer.

Yet we see nothing when it comes to Tri. Sure we have the usual Sunday group rides or run at a store type thing. I don't get it. People will complain endlessly about the costs of say doing a Half Iron at $150 a race yet when it's suggested to do the Club Fat Ass method. You get dead silence. So people like shelling out $150 bucks before hotel costs, gas, food, and so on? And they do it race after race then complain about it.

I for one got tired of it. Sure I understand that events cost money. But at a certain point one simply because I'd rather spend the money on other stuff. I'd spend $20 to drive to Brockville on a Tuesday night to race for free. Then spend $50 to race a sanctioned event. I'd rather do a training event that is fun. Drink beer and hang out with people then jump through hoops.

This is the year of free events. The Tour du Buttertart is the first of the year.

OCA Kills The Joy

So, it has finally happened. I have been robbed of the joy of being involved in a sport by the attitude of a governing body.

In the last few years it started as amusement then moved to frustration in dealing with the OCA. For a business, yes that is what it is. It is a business that runs a sport in the province. Yet time and time again the decisions made are not only baffling yet if this was in the real world they would be seeking protection from creditors.

A few years ago when finishing up my coach's stuff I thought it was a one off situation. At that time I was submiting the final paper work for my level one. Looking for some info about the process I go by the office to ask what needs to be done. You know, to make it easier. I get told that all I needed was to provide letters of refrence of 2 people I had coached. Easy enough, I even asked do they need to be licensed as members and if so what license must they have. I get told none.

Thus begins the circus.

A few weeks later I submit the paper work including the references. I included mailing address, phone numbers, and emails of those people in case they might be needed. Next thing I get told was those where now not good enough. I needed some one with a license.You gotta be kidding me. Even after submiting the new requirement it took nearly a year for it to be processed. And that was taken care of by the temp guy visitng from Australia. He wasn't impressed by this.

Flash forward to the last couple of years of cyclocross. Which I took up because it's fun. Yet the race fun began to dissipate. A large reason for that is the draconian rantings of the commissaire. Sure I understand there are rules but it does not require one to be continously ranting and yelling at people during a race. We race for fun not to be berated and yelled at. If we wanted that we would go to work that day instead and get paid for that.

I have raced for years Triathlon and Duathlon yet have no memory of this level of nonsense. And if there was the races would be far closer to empty of participants.

Then let's add the joy of dealing with the office. First try looking for a membership fee on the website. If you are a lowly Serf non card carrying point chaser there is no cost listed. And no response to emails. I know what the excuse will be.. they where overwhelmed by workshops.

Last fall 2 weeks before Cyclocross season began no schedule was up. And the excuse was beng overwhemed by Ontario Summer Games. Gimme a break. The summer games is every 2 years and if there is no plan in place by now then the entire office should be canned. This is simply a failure. And when you point out all this...heir response is to blame the member for not showing up to a committee meeting.

It's startig to look more tempting to give m membership money for 2011 to Tri Ontario for a coaching license. At least with them I'm not left feeling like a lowly Serf. To bad there aren't more non OCA approved "training" events.

It's the last day of the year and it's that time to look at the best of 2010. Well the stuff that stands out that I used this year or events I took part in.

Best Components:

Hope Stainless BB: What can one not say about this bottom bracket. It has stood up to the dust of summer and now is taking on winter. And proof that the masters of riding in mud, filth, and grime know what needs to be done.

Marzocchi Drop Off 4: Not new but was a major upgrade in the fork department. Solid with little flex. And it met the finance committee's cost cutting requirements.

Best Clothing:

Endura Singletrack Shorts: Simple black shorts that are great. Well stitched and comfortable. Pretty adaptable to riding in spring, summer, and fall. One big bonus is that they do dry quickly.

Wool Socks: Keeps you warm even when wet. Doesn't stink the car up like a bag of 6 month old hockey gear. Is cool in the warm of summer and warm in the cool of spring and fall.

Yaktrax Sport: Simply put, I would have spent half of last winter doing head dabs as I ran or walked. Just don't try to walk across a tile floor with them on your shoes.

Events:

Paul's Dirty Enduro: Good local event that supports a good cause. Chili post race with lots of fun singletrack. Laid back race crew.

Dundas Monstercross: Fun non race event. New place to ride as well as meeting new people. Good pumpkin soup and warming beverages for post ride festivities with good people.

Hope Stainless Bottom Bracket

Last June I finally picked up a new external bottom bracket from Hope Components.

What can I say. This BB has impressed me to no end since it was installed. Other then a couple of tightening the crank bolt to remove a little play. This BB has been rock solid since it was installed.

The first thing while installing I noticed was that the plastic piece was simply a cover for the bearings. Unlike Shimano's or Race Face BB's where the cover also acts as a shim between the bearing inner race and the crank axle. Hope went a different route. They went with a bearing that when you install the crank actually is in direct contact with the inner race of the bearing. No plastic shim that can crack or start creaking after a while. It's a good tight fit.

The other change is that tube piece that one installs between the 2 BB cups that one installs in the BB Shell of the frame. Again no plastic here. This comes as a tube made of metal. A much better alternative to the plastic pieces that others use. It is also has O ring seals to help seal the unit even more from the crud and moisture of the world. And Hope offers this piece seperate from the BB. Even in different lengths depending upon you BB being either 68, 73, or 83 in size.

As I mentioned already about the seals. This BB is built to deal with crud, nud, and nasty winter. Should be no surprise as Hope comes from the land of filth riding. And have learned what it will take to increase the longevity of bearings. So far the seals on the Hope have exceeded those on Race Face and Shimano BB's by a huge margin.

As a former mechanic and a coach, I would be installing this BB on anyone's bike who was either doing and adventure race or a off road triathlon. Simply because I know it can take the abuse. Which even in Canada faced with our Canadian muck and grime plus add winter crud. Well, only something good and sealed can fit the bill.

Duffins Creek Pizza Ride

In the continuing mission to ride new places and explore. Hooked up with my buddy Nick to attend his Duffins Creek Pizza Ride on the last weekend of October. So again on a over cast day headed out to the meeting loction. Both bike and pizza fixngs in tow. At least this drive was short with Pickering nearby.

We gathered at Nick's place and like any group ride it took the usual extra time to get ready. Add the usual attempt to figure out what gear to wear. Nothing like a fall day to make gear selection fun. Part of the problem being it was forecasted to rain. Plus waiting for Ilan and Wayne to get there as they where a little late due to the GO Train being delayed. Then it was off.

Nick led us down a couple of streets then into his local trails. Which like the Dundas ride I still have no clue where we went. Lot's of rocky hill climbs and some fun descents. Though sadly I had to walk some of the descents as my front brake decided to take a vacation- no power at all. But after a bit of tinkering was able to ride some DH. Though did figure out that hydaulic brake seals in the cold tend to leak.

At one point while moving at speed watched Wayne do the front wheel mud slide to ricochet into the brush. Proving again, that easier sections lead to lack of trail focus which leads to crashes. I say that as it occured while riding 4x4 track towards more singletrack.

During the ride back to Nick's place he showed us his little downhill run he built. Nothing big just a simple little line. Some of the best times can be had on the simplest of lines. The we continued back to Nick's place. Which after 20 minutes of riding we returned to his place. After 3 hours of in the woods riding it started raining.

Then it was time to crank up the oven, crack open a beer, and make pizza. And for the record Nick makes a good pizza dough.

Handlebar Booties

Last February I got my hands on these Handlebar Booties courtesy of my buddy Andrew at Cycle Solutions. He let me know of these winter lovelies that are a wicked solution to the problem of winter riding.

Since I have been out here I have had to make do with various combinations of bulky gloves. And since I tend to run warm things get sweaty in some of the other systems I have tried. Plus the problem other issue with bulky winter gloves is that one start to lose feel, meaning you not only have a harder time gripping the bar but also as the glove thickness increases you start to lose that feel of what the bike is doing.

Similar to what you see riders use in Iditabike, but without all the extras like pockets. Enough room though if you want to stick a small camera for short periods.

The day these pictures where taken was -24 on the way to work and I wore just a standard pair of full fingers and no issue. Which for me is a good thing as Goretex gloves turn into a sweat sauna when I use them.

These are only usable on bikes with flat or riser bars. So that means road and cross bikes are out of luck. But this is about keeping the mountain biking in the fun of minus 20 Ontario winter.

Dundas Monstercross

On October 2nd was the social event of the fall Cyclocross season, the Dundas Monstercross in Hamilton.

So after some thought the decision was made. Departed Toronto at the wonderful time of 7am and headed out on the 401. Smooth sailing till near Hamilton when had the fun of getting around all the highway repaving. But no worries as all in attendance where still getting gear sorted and dressed when I arrived. Sadly I have never been good remembering names but it was great to meet Linda, Tom, and Marc the organizer of this ride as well as his wife Nerdgirl.. Which turned out to be to celebrate his birthday.

So after the usual talking, changing, checking of tires , and posturing with bikes. We were off. Mark led us on an interesting route that combined a bit of road connectors, rail trail, double track, and a wee bit of singletrack. Really I have no real clue where Marc led us but does it really matter? It's all about getting out with people and having fun. Had a mix of bikes which in order of majority- 29ers, Cross bikes, and one lone token 26 inch wheel mountain bike.

Having never ridden at all in 8 years of moving to Ontario in the Dundas/Hamilton area. It was nice to sample some new trails. Though I have no clue really what the route was as I mentioned earlier. Though I think the Deer head on the trail discovery was the weird find of the ride. And Tom riding his SS Steelwool worked on his rut magnet skills was entertaining. especially when you consider Marc was on a skinny tired cross bike. But it is nice not at times not having to make these difficult route choices and just ride. Plus the evil rain held off till near the end so we avoided getting the wet gear march to Garage Monster's Lair.

After 3 plus hours we returned to the Lair and thus began the pumpkin soup phase of this Monstercross Duathlon. Nothing like warming up after a chilly misty fall ride with warm soup. And the Garage Monster makes good pumpkin soup. Of course chased with a bit of alcohol. And a gathering of cyclists can't be completed without talking about cycling, impersonating race officials, and such other cycling topics.

After a good feed thus began the drive home along the brake light freeway oops, I mean the QEW towards Toronto. Sadly the plan to ride a bit more as the rain came down and thwarted my plan for checking out the Waterdown trails and simply had to start the long drive home.

Dirtbag Road Bike Build Part 1

Have been wanting to rebuild a road bike for riding to get more mileage. Though to keep costs low had to do it as cheaply as possible as I want to get a Cyclocross bike this winter. Plus it came about simply due to a discussion with someone with the misguided belief that one has to spend lots of money to have a road bike or a tri bike.

First step was the frame which was easy. Had an old Centurion Le Mans in my parents basement so had it shipped out. Once I received it I stripped it of all the parts. And after a trip to Rona for black spray paint. The reason for this is there was rust in some spots from the frame being chipped and such from use. Painstakingly cleaned the rust off section by section and painted each section black. After everything was cleaned and painted. Began adding layer after layer of paint- basically sprayed it once then let it dry. Once that was done added a few layers of clear coat. Sure would love to have the old Centurion 1980's paint job but I am not that skilled. And am no where near the Hamster level of skill that is the Dicky.

While this was going on sourced various times. Set of road brakes $25, wheels $60, brake levers $30, cranks acquired from a parts swap, chain parts bin, bars freebie, tires $25, Derrailleurs freebies, and cassette parts bin. Pretty much less than $300 bucks with the only part remaining to get being a Octalink V1 BB. Plus need some tires, hoping to find some 700x25's if I can.

Now keep in mind this is only for fun. The bike will be spending the winter mounted to the old Turbo Trainer as riding road bikes in snow and ice is not fun. That is what the cross bike will be for as well as the Concubine V2. Though the next project will definitely be the funding of a cross bike for 2011.

The reality is that this is a build project to see how cheaply one can build up a road bike. It's to challenge the present convention that one needs to shell out large sums of cash to ride or race well. Shortly the build will be complete and Part 2 will be the full cost and other such as uninteresting weight weenie gibberish as can be applied to a non UCI approved project bike.

Headed out to Ganaraska Forest for the 15th on September 18th. This year after my knees deciding to go on strike during the 60k only did the 30k.

Going into this my goals where really to simply ride it, I lost 2 weeks of training as my lower back did it's annual go on strike. So wasn't able to do as much as I wanted to before hand. So with no expectation headed out, the nice thing with the Dirty Enduro is those racing the 30k get a civilized 1pm start time.

After getting the call up to the start and the usual reaction to nerves it was line up time. Only carried one bottle with some Eload mixed in.

For about the first 3k we rolled along at an easy pace as everyone sorted out there place. Plus trying to avoid the usual first corner pile up as everyone over brakes.

At about the 3 k mark I upped my pace a bit. My plan at that point was to pass a bunch of riders before we hit the singletrack. Trying to avoid getting blocked. Once was in the singletrack the flow began. Felt good going through the singletrack. Even cleaned the section that I hade to dismount and run through the brush to get around a 5 rider pile up in 2009.

I should mention the weather was better then 2009, not a hot. and we missed out on any rain storms despite the dark clouds that seemed to be nearby. It seems that everyone at the Crank The Shield got the rain effect.

The first 15km went well, maintained a nice pace. Focus was completely on having fun and riding the flow. I think I scared a couple of people bombing down some of the DH's clearing logs and bouncing off a couple of trees. The same fun as in 2009 but on the Mistress this time. Can sat that I had more fun riding the Mistress this time.

After a brief stop at the aid station that marked the half way point and refilled my water bottle. Headed back out to resume the last 15km. Back on the singletrack resumed then fun flow ride I was having. I did up the pace for the last half. About the 20k point had the fun of getting stung by a angry wasp. Someone had missed the line and stirred the nest when they went wide.

At about the 7k out point one of the volunteers called out 7k left. Pushed it a bit for the next few km's. After some fun descents and technical sections suddenly was the left turn onto the grass. Followed by the sprint and sweeping right hander into the finish area.

And that was it. Another Paul's Dirty Enduro done and in the books. Goal was met that being to simply have a good ride and have fun. The Mistress held up and so did my knees. Now it was time for some Chili and hang out into the evening with the Don Rats.

Already starting plans for 2011. Looking at being able to ride it sans pack next year. But more on that plan later.

Destroyed on of the cogs in my cassette. Good thing I butcher apart my cassettes and build my own to fit my needs. Makes it easy to replace cogs.

Tips For Dating An Endurance Athlete

A dating guide to understanding your triathlete (or runner or cyclist...)

"I am an outdoors type of person." Really means: I train in any type of weather. If its raining, snowing, 90 degrees w/100% humidity, or winds gusting at 30 mph. I don't want to hear any complaints because I will still train in it and you're just a big wuss for complaining about it.

"I enjoy riding my bike." Really means: With or w/o aero bars, alone or in a peloton, I don't care. If you can't do a spur of the moment 30 miler then you're not my type. I will let you draft, but if you can't hang and I drop you - I will see you later. I am a capable mechanic, but don't expect me to change your flats or tune your bike. You need to learn that on your own.

"I enjoy jogging." Really means: Lets run hills until we puke. I have just as many shoes as you only mine are better because they are functional and all look the same.

"I enjoy dining out." Really means: I enjoy eating out, in or anywhere else I can find food. Don't be shy because with the amount of food I eat, you can have that main entree instead of a salad and you will still look as though you eat like a rabbit in comparison. Don't get your limbs too close though as I may take a bite out of you. Most importantly don't expect any taste off my plate unless you can bring something to the party like more food. Eventually though if your not burning 4,000+ calories a day your going to plump up and have a terrible complex due to watching me eat deserts and not gain any weight. Friends and family will eventually decide not to dine with us anymore due to my horrid table manners. Oh, and don't ask me any questions during breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon lunch, dinner or recovery dinner as it does not lend to efficient food intake.

"I enjoy quiet walks on the beach." Really means: Walks on the beach warming up into an 8 mile run and then plunging myself in the ocean for a 2 miler. If you get in my way you're going to find out what mass start is and let me assure you that you don't want to find out.

"I find fulfilment in charitable work." Really means: If I am not racing, I am volunteering or cheering on my buddies and I expect you to be there along side me as I stand out in 90 degree weather for 8 hours handing out sports drink to cyclists going 20 mph. Just stick the ol' arm out there and hope it doesn't get taken off.

"I enjoy sharing quiet moments together." Really means: It's taper time. Just back off because I am strategizing, trying to get into the zone and in a pissy mood because I am worried about my "A" race and can't workout.

"I am an active person." Really means: Aside from my 40 hour job, and the 8 mandatory hours of sleep a night. 10 hours a week are devoted to me during the off-season and 20 during race season leaving us 4 hours. 2 of which are spent inhaling food and you not talking to me, so lets make the best of the 2 hours we will spend together on average each day.

If you are a licensed message therapist or doctor this would make the most optimal use of our time together. Nutritionist is also acceptable, but I probably already know just as much as you.

"I enjoy road trips and vacations." Really means: You have your choice of British Columbia, Wisconsin, Idaho, Florida, California, Arizona, and New York, but don't expect to do much site seeing. But if I get enough support from you we might be able to include Hawaii in there.

"I enjoy site seeing." Really means: Lets grab a mountain bike and get our HR's up to 90%. There's plenty of time to look around on the descent as trees and bushes whiz by you at 40 mph.

"I like stimulating conversation." Really means: while we are running, we can talk about food. Then we can talk about how we decided what to wear on this run based on the temperature at start time versus the temperature at the time we expect to finish, how horribly out of shape we are, how many miles we did last week, and how many we will do this week and next week. Then we can talk about food.

"I enjoy relaxing soaks in the tub." Really Means: I'm going to stop on the way home and buy two bags of ice, throw them in the tub with some water, and sit in this torture chamber for 30 minutes.

"I'm interested in photography" Really Means: My camera is permanently perched a tripod in front of my trainer. I obsess over taking photos of my bike position and analyzing them to get the perfect set-up.

"I'm into in technology" Really Means: My HRM and bike computer are my best friends. Until you can give me some hard data that can improve my training, don't bother trying to buddy up to me. You could one day break into the top three if you recognize and feed my dependancy by buying me more gear.

Monstercross?

I was a little bored a few days ago and thought to try this idea. I mounted my drop bars on the Concubine. More based on the fact it's taking along time to accumulate the parts for the yet to be named road bike.

I guess some people call it monstercross but whatever. In reality I wanted to try out a different set up. Partially because I have always wanted to try it out. And because cyclocross racing begins in about 6 weeks. Well, when ever the OCA actually gets some info out. But more on that in another post.

So far it seems okay. the biggest problem so far is the stem needs to be 70mm not 90mm. And needs a 15 to 20 degree rise. It's still effecting my hands a bit plus feel a bit stretched out. Though the bigger issue is the little brake pad retaining bolt has siezed. Will have to use the vice at the shop to help deal with it this week.

Finally had the chance to head up to Brockville to hit the Black and Decker trails. After fighting the lousy drivers on the 401 got to hit the trails.

The area is kind of interesting. Lot's of loops that kind of end up in circles yet are all fun. Lots of rock and fun little climbs. Unfortunately didn't get to the other section that is on the other side of the 401.

I Love Chromag

Three years on since I pulled the trigger on a 2007 Chromag Stylus.

I have ridden it in rain, snow, dust, and mud. It has been rock solid and given me lots of fun. I have changed components many times in 3 years. I have commuted on it, raced it, and done epic rides with the Don rats.

Bike Geometry

This will sound like a rant. Probably is.

So, after I put the GT Peace 9r beside the Chromag I noticed something that may explain my beef with it. While sitting on the couch of all things. that being the stem sits way to low. No wonder it feels weird.

And on closer inspection I notice another little detail. That the suspension forks top caps are micro meters away from hitting the down tube. What the flip?? According to GT's specs this should not be a problem. Yet it is. What the hell is GT doing?? Using the blind to design the frame??

So after taking multiple measurements and talking to my buddy the old school bike guy we see the problem. That being the geniuses at GT made the head tube way to short, it should be on a small frame. This has caused way to much weight on the bars and therefore the front wheel. No wonder my hands feel weird. Plus as Jay mentioned to me, no wonder it's so hard to pull up the front wheel. As he pointed out they got it all wrong.

The solution is simple, new headset from Cane Creek- the S3 Plus 5 and a new fork. Or more like a used one- something like a Manitou Minute or a Rock Shok. Hopefully something with a 20mm axle. As Jay pointed out to me this will do a good job of getting my weight further back- where it's bloody supposed to be. This way I can ride it a bit more untill I can get the Paradox frame this fall.

So right now the purchases needed are the headset and the front fork. But boy it is frustrating when one realizes that it wouldn't be a problem if they had actually left material.

What is even more funny to me is the geometry of the Zaskar 29er this year. They shortened the chainstays like everyone else has. Only major difference is companies like Kona for example did that across the board it seems. Yet GT just leaves it be.
